In Second Grade, students are strengthening their foundational in critical thinking skills in all subject areas.

English Language Arts

FLDOE Grade 2 Parent Guide

  • Ask and answer such questions as who, what, when, where and how to demonstrate an understanding of key details in a text.
  • Use the information gained from illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate an understanding of characters, settings or plots being read.
  • Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
  • Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
  • Write short narratives or reports.
  • Print legibly.
  • Use digital tools to produce written products.

Math

  • Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rows and columns.
  • Count within 1,000. Skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s.
  • Read and write numbers to 1,000 using base-ten numerals (a number system based on 10 also known as the decimal system), number names and expanded form.
  • Add up to four two-digit numbers by using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
  • Fluently add and subtract within 20. By the end of second grade, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
  • Mentally add or subtract 10 or 100 to a given number 100 through 900.
  • Tell and write time from an analog and digital clock to the nearest 5 minutes.
  • Measure lengths.
  • Recognize currency and their value (paper money and coins).

Science

  • Earth and Space Science: Recognize that the Earth is made of rocks. Describe how soil can be formed along with how to classify soil types. Compare and describe changing patterns such as weather conditions. How to prepare for severe weather.
  • Life Science:  Distinguish human body parts such as the brain, heart, lung, stomach, muscles, and skeleton. Observe and describe the life cycles of plants and animals. Compare and contrast the basic needs that all living things have. Recognize and explain habitats.
  • Physical Science:  Attraction and repulsion of magnets. Basic knowledge of states of matter.
    Measurement of temperature and volume of liquids. Basic knowledge of electricity. Change in motion as it relates to force.

Social Studies

  • Using the media center or other sources to answer a historical question.
  • Recognizing that Native Americans were the first inhabitants in North America.
  • The ways daily life for colonists changed over time.
  • The consequences of an absence of rules and laws.
  • Recognizing that people make choices because of limited resources.
  • Using maps to locate town, state, continent and other countries in North America.
