FLDOE Grade 4 Parent Guide

  • Determine the theme of a story, drama or poem based on details in the text, and to summarize the text.
  • Conduct a short research project that builds knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.
  • Explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text.
  • Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details and clear event sequences.
  • Demonstrate legible cursive writing skills.
  • Use technology to produce written products.

Math

  • Determine whether an equation is true or false without solving, but instead using knowledge of numbers.
  • Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm (the algorithm is the procedure for adding and subtracting you learned in school).
  • Apply and extend previous understanding of multiplication to multiply a fraction by a whole number.
  • Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators of 10 or 100. For example, rewrite 0.62 as 62/100; describe a length as 0.62 meters; locate 0.62 on a number line diagram.
  • Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real-world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room, given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.
  • Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit and a two-digit by a two-digit using strategies based on place value using rectangular arrays and/or area models.
  • Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors using place value strategies, rectangular arrays and/or area models.

Science

  • Earth and Space Science: The Lunar Cycle. Observations of how patterns of stars move over the course of an evening as well as different stars being visible during different seasons. Recognize that the Earth revolves around the Sun and rotates every 24 hours resulting in day/night pattern. Identify the three categories of rocks (igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary). Physical properties of minerals. Describe the difference between weathering and erosion. Renewable and nonrenewable resources found on Earth.
  • Life Science: Reproduction in plants. Explain that characteristics of plants and animals can be affected by the environment. Recognize animal behaviors may be shaped by heredity and learning. Compare and contrast major life cycles of plants and animals, incomplete and complete metamorphosis. Food chains and food webs. Recognize ways plants and animals, including humans, impact the environment.
  • Physical Science: Measure and compare objects and materials based on properties such as mass, volume, color, hardness, texture and attraction to magnets. Explore the Law of Conservation of Mass. Chemical and Physical Change. Observe and describe basic forms of energy such as light, heat and the energy of motion. Recognize how heat flows, such as conduction. Motion of objects, such as speed.

Social Studies

  • A comparison of the Native American tribes in Florida.
  • The causes and effects of European colonization on the Native American tribes of Florida.
  • Early settlements and Spanish rule in Florida.
  • Changes in Florida at various times throughout its history.
  • Florida’s economy and the effect of tourism.
  • Features of local and state government.
